Lori Elliot

Lori and German Shepherd Dog Duncan began training at Tails U Win in 1994, with a puppy kindergarten class when Duncan was 10 weeks old.  They never left!  After puppy class, they continued on with classes to prepare for the Canine Good Citizen test, competition obedience and competition agility, as well as stabs at flyball and freestyle.  Though Duncan was anything but an easy adolescent – and many people thought she should give up – Leslie Nelson-Moss and the instructors at Tails were supportive of their persistence (see the results in the letters after Duncan’s name – obedience and agility titles).  When offered a position assisting in teaching classes at Tails in 1998, Lori was honored and jumped at the chance.  She has progressed to teaching Puppy Kindergarten and Family Dog II classes (usually with a partner, Michele Longo).

Lori only teaches part time (she works full time for the Connecticut Department of Labor as a Programs and Services Coordinator).  She has an undergraduate degree in Education and a Masters in Organizational Behavior.  She and Duncan have added Caleb, another German Shepherd Dog, to the family.  Caleb is reactive to people and other dogs.  While he can’t yet be a demo dog in classes, his training provides Lori with many opportunities to use the same skills she teaches in class.  Even in stories, Caleb is a good example for her students and should certainly communicate her understanding of how difficult it can sometimes be to train a young dog.  Someday, she still expects to see as many letters after Caleb’s name as Duncan has achieved – he is already showing great promise in tracking.
