In 1978 Cathy asked her friend Leslie Nelson , “what breed would  make a good family pet and a fun obedience competitor?”  Leslie suggested the not yet popular, golden retriever.  After a bit of a search, she found a litter sired by a CH, UD titled dog.  This was the start of a love affair with the breed that continues today.

 For over 25 years Cathy has been titling her goldens in obedience and field as well as competing in the breed ring and dabbling in agility and tracking.

Her dogs have earned multiple UD’s, both her boys have earned the Golden Retriever Club of America’s coveted Versatility Certificate. And her beloved “Mikey”, a well known personality in the Tails, office was awarded the title of Outstanding Sire for his many very accomplished offspring.

Having also bred litters of goldens, Cathy has been able to pass on her knowledge and experience to new puppy owners.   When Leslie asked her to join the Tails staff in 1995 she thought that working in the office would be her strong point.  There, she could guide those looking for the right program for their dogs, instruct owners on the benefits of positive reinforcement training and help with those desperate new puppy owner questions.  After almost 20 years teaching both grammar school and high school children, answering questions just “comes naturally”

Chickadee is Cathy’s present competition dog and she is hopeful that one of Chickie’s grandchildren will be the next golden “fur-kid” member of her family.
