Puppy Kindergarten is an introductory class for puppies 4 months old or younger at the start of class. This class teaches all of the same skills that are taught in Family Dog I (sit, down, stay, come when called, emergency recall, walk politely on lead, and more) with emphasis placed on puppy behaviors like inappropriate mouthing and biting, as well as management issues and socialization. Classes are small in size, fun for you and your puppy, and very effective!

Please note that your puppy does NOT have to have a RABIES vaccination to start this class if he/she is not yet old enough to have received their rabies vaccine.

The first class is an orientation for owners only - your puppies can stay home.  This informative seminar is required as you will receive all the class handouts, reading materials and several important homework assignments. If you cannot make the first night for the class that best fits your schedule, please call the office at 860-646-5033 so we can either schedule a makeup 1st class or so you can attend a different first class.

"Should I sign up for Puppy Kindergarten or Family Dog I?"

If you answer YES to these questions, then you should sign up for PUPPY KINDERGARTEN:

  • Is your puppy 4 months old and younger?

  • Does your puppy need more socialization (interaction with other puppies, sights, smells, etc)?

  • Does your puppy need to learn the basic behaviors of Sit, Down, Stay, and how to greet people politely both at home and away from home?

If you answered NO to these questions, you should sign up for FAMILY DOG I.

Please note- this class is NOT appropriate for dogs who are reactive (bark, lunge, growl) at other dogs or people, or dogs that have a bite history. If your dog is experiencing any of those behavioral issues, please contact our office to inquire about private lessons at 860-646-5033 or office@tailsuwin.com

Fee: $225 (includes tax) - for 8 one hour classes.  Classes meet once a week. Payment is non-refundable and non-transferable with under 48 hours notice of group class start date.  Payment is required to hold the reservation. See our class policies.

To register for a class online, click on the title of the class that works best for your schedule, select Sign Up, and follow the prompts. If a class has a Monday start date, for example, it will run every Monday at the time scheduled for 8-consecutive weeks.

Family Dog I

Family Dog I

Family Dog I is an introductory class for dogs over 4 months of age that are just beginning training. You will learn to teach your dog to pay attention when asked, greet politely, come when called, walk on a loose leash, sit, lie down, and stay. Management skills, ignoring distractions, and problem solving will also be stressed. Classes are small in size, fun for you and your dog and very effective.

The first class is an orientation for owners only - your dogs can stay home.  This informative seminar is required as you will receive important homework assignments to set your dog up for success before they even enter the classroom. If you cannot make the first night for the class that best fits your schedule, please call the office at 860-646-5033 so we can find an alternate orientation class for you to attend.

Family Dog II is where you will perfect what you have learned in PK/FDI.  Your dog will learn to work around increasing distractions, respond to signals at a distance, and you’ll be introduced to certain foundational skills for sports like agility, rally obedience, or prepare for the Canine Good Citizen Test.

After successfully completing Family Dog II, you and your dog will have the skills necessary to participate in any of the programs offered at Tails. We offer several class selections over the course of a year.
